It's a question that is repeated ad nauseam since the end of World War II:
How could such an evil man bring a vast population under his spell? How could he be allowed to order the butchering and experimentation of Jews, the handicapped, gypsies, Marxists and dissenters? Let us explore the breath-taking suppositions that are buried within these questions. To begin with, we must look at the thought processes of the man who came to be known as Der Fuhrer.
The book most readily quoted by Hitler's critics is, naturally enough, the one which he wrote himself. Mein Kampf was written by a man who had been locked away by society for the terrible crime of exploring his innate talents of persuasion; Granted, early on he favoured a more direct, fast-tracked approach to achieving his goals which involved the use of firearms; But he soon learned to soften his stance and put away his weapons to focus on powers of persuasive rhetoric along with his magical wordsmith and ally Joseph Goebbels. Here was a mercurially talented individual who had been down on his luck; Discharged from the army, he had tried his hand at painting but when that didn't work out, instead of wallowing in self-pity he went to find an honest day's work in German military intelligence.
The Tragically Flawed Interpretation Of A Marvellous Book
Wildly misunderstood by both scholars and casual commentators alike, passages are quoted without so much as a cursory analysis to explore exactly what Hitler was trying to say. Let's take an example:
“Eternal Nature inexorably avenges the infringement of her commands. Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord .”
During the 1920s and 30s it was well-known that Jews in inter-war period had become obsessed with the game of soccer. Hitler being of a competitive nature felt that German soccer teams were becoming overly dominated by Semitic management who favoured a 3 - 3 - 4 formation- a defensive line-up. Contrary to this, Hitler was known to favour an attack formation such as 5 - 3 - 2. Coming up to the 1936 Olympics der Fuhrer was afraid that with the "miserly" Jewish approach to the game, the chance of victory by the Germans would be lost. He was already fuhrious about the fact that Jessie Owens was coming from the US to humiliate their athletes in track and field events.
Most scholars will convince you that Hitler's "Final Solution" was actually about genocide when in fact this was all just a massive misunderstanding by historians. It is not known whether Hitler's commanders also misunderstood his point, or were just so enraged by not even making the top three in Munich that they went on a killing spree. In any case, millions of deaths resulted, and consequently Jews lost just about all their interest in soccer.
Other Criticisms Of The Third Reich
Nazi critics will try to convince us that free expression wasn't encouraged by the regime. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. Just because lots of people happen to have similar opinions on a particular topic or admire a certain character doesn't automatically mean that they are all just automatons without thoughts, feelings, and creative impulses of their own. The gatherings at Nuremberg were a celebration of individuality, where huge numbers of free thinkers all came together to thank Hitler for recognising their unique personalities and talents.
What About All The Nazi Flags? Didn't They Overdo It A Bit?
This is yet another constant source of irritation from critics. What most historians conveniently leave out of the discussion on this is the fact that each Nazi flag was lovingly hand-crafted by German seamstresses who imbued each one with subtle little details of their own invention and design: Little motifs and words of encouragement or sometimes cheeky jests poking innocent fun at the Nazi leaders. Hitler, Goebbels, Himmler and Goring all found these highly amusing and regularly complemented their humour and creativity. Their creativity does not come across in the grainy film or photos of the time, and very few Nazi flags survived the aftermath of the war, so evidence of this has unfortunately been lost to history.
When Will Justice Be Done?
As we can see, there are so many wrongs to be put right, and here we have only touched on the surface. For example we haven't delved into the whole Liebensraum misspelling debacle in which Hitler had ordered the German military to go and spread love (Liebe) in the East, not to create living space (Lebensraum) for the Aryan race. Again, this unfortunate error led to massive numbers of deaths in Europe. Hitler, unable to admit to such an embarrassing screw-up by his close subordinates felt he had to carry on with the war. Besides, he didn't want to throw his good friends and confidantes under the Straßenbahn, and at that stage he felt they might as well finish what they started. The Russians in any case were hardly going to listen to such excuses as they rolled their T34s into Berlin. Alas, for now, it seems that justice will be delayed and we’ll all just keep blaming the Nazis for destroying Europe. However, there is hope: Their natural successors in the European Union might finally show some mettle and reveal the real truth to the world.
We live in hope.
Heil Der EU! Heil Ursula!
